The Equatorial Jungle by Henri Rousseau, 1909. I am really quite ashamed to say that I knew nothing about Henri Rousseau (other than his interest in primitivism) until about a month ago. Now, I am hooked. He creates such intricately layered compositions with a dark presence; the scenes are never completely calm, there is always a feeling of an event to come. This is one of Rousseau’s later works after his style had really developed into its naive art genre: The Equatorial Jungle really does look like an illustration from a children’s book!
